Outstanding Dinner at Marco Trattoria, Brevard

Picture Outside the Marco Trattoria Restaurant in Brevard, NC

Some friends told us they liked the Marco Trattoria restaurant in Brevard, so we planned a visit. We were glad we made a reservation because we didn’t realize it was the same night as the Christmas Parade and Twilight Tour

Brevard NC Christmas Parade and Twilight Tour

The Brevard Chamber of Commerce turned the quaint little town into a beautifully decorated scene straight from the movie, It’s a Wonderful Life, with carriage rides down luminaire-lit streets, singing, a Christmas tree lighting at the courthouse, pony and train rides, and lots of other activities.

From the moment we arrived at the Marco Trattoria restaurant, we had a great culinary experience. The dining area is casual and comfortable, with booths and tables…

The staff was exceptionally helpful and courteous. (I have no idea how they remember all the specials, let alone all the ingredients in them.) There were lots of choices, and they all sounded fantastic. We started with a basket of bread and Theros extra virgin olive oil with imported Parmesan cheese. It was addicting.

Theros Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Then we had a fantastic “Marco Salad” which had Arugula, more Theros EVOO, red sea salt, grilled lemon and goat cheese crostini. It was amazing. And large. So we shared it…

Both of our entrées were phenomenal. One was the special Chicken Roulade, stuffed with spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, and goat cheese…

The other was tender and delicious Veal Marsala with potato au gratin and asparagus…

We asked for a bottle of the Marsala to take home, but I guess we’ll have to go back to enjoy it. We finished off our meal with dessert – Theros olive oil and Rosemary cake with roasted peaches and peach Gelato…

It sounded unusual, but it looked and tasted wonderful. Marco Trattoria restaurant is a gold mine, located just off the beaten path, at 204 West Main Street, Brevard, North Carolina 28712. Call 828.883.4841 for reservations.

Everything in its place at Newman's Restaurant in Saluda, NC.

The atmosphere and service at Newman’s are spectacular. But the highlight of our visits were the meals. The innkeepers are also chefs and they have extensive backgrounds in preparing gourmet meals for guests. (Read their story here.) As a result, their guests come back to Newman’s (and the Orchard Inn) repeatedly to enjoy some of the best food in all of Western North Carolina. Both of our meals started with butternut squash soup with roasted pumpkin seeds and Austrian pumpkin seed oil, and a fresh salad of organic greens, cherry tomatoes, hearts of palm, roasted sunflower seeds, and home made house dressing. Excellent…

We tasted each others entrées, and we couldn’t decide who had the best one. They were both spectacular. For dessert, one of us had forest berry pie with vanilla ice cream, and the other had chocolate decadence pie (with Grand Marnier). They were both indescribably delicious…

A couple of weeks ago at Newman’s we celebrated our anniversary (for the second time) with another couple. The chef got wind of it and ta-DA… our apple cobbler dessert arrived as a sweet greeting card!

Now we have to go back for brunch. It’s served to both guests and anyone who makes a reservation. I understand it’s the one of the best in Western North Carolina. (Can’t wait!)

A Perfect Dinner at the Glass Onion Restaurant

Photo Outside the Glass Onion Restaurant in Weaverville, NC

We ventured a few minutes north of Asheville for our anniversary dinner at the Glass Onion restaurant. We made an early reservation and arrived right on time. The quaint exterior and attractive dining room were just as we had hoped. And Susan, our waitress, fully described the specials and helped make our dining experience very enjoyable.

We had heard good things about the Glass Onion, but we didn’t expect it to be so incredible. The food and service were truly fantastic. We started our meal with some delicious garlic knots, and then we shared two specials: an Arugula & Butternut Squash Salad and Tuscan White Bean & Panchetta Ham Soup…

Spectacular Hospitality at Old Edwards Inn & Spa

Entrance Old Edwards Inn, Highlands, North Carolina

After hearing so many good things about the Old Edwards Inn and Spa, we finally rode out to Highlands, North Carolina, to spend the night and see it for ourselves. We found it to be even better than we were told.

Entrance to Falls Cottages at Old Edwards Inn

Pampered doesn’t begin to describe how the staff at the Old Edwards Inn treated us. They went way beyond our expectations in every way. When we checked in the steward gave us a glass of Champagne and escorted us to our suite in the Falls Cottages.

We stayed in the impressive Cullasaja cottage (above). The rustic, massive stone and wood exterior was stunning.

Old Edwards Inn Gifts

Inside our suite we found two complimentary caps, cookies and a rose, along with separate notes from the Old Edwards Inn president and sales manager. The suite itself was large and comfortable, with a fireplace, small bar and lots of seating in the living area.

The Old Edwards Inn and Spa has eight different dining opportunities, but we enjoyed the ambiance and convenience of Madison’s Restaurant for both dinner and breakfast…

Madisons Restaurant at Old Edwards Inn and Spa

We’ve been told the dress code is “mountain chic” which I’m pretty sure is similar to business casual. But the food is strictly black-tie-over-the-top-fantastic. We started with a scallop and pâté appetizer that was out of this world…

Our salads had baked pears, fried goat cheese, and garden fresh greens. It was as delicious as it was pretty…

As usual, we didn’t watch our calories and ordered desserts: a pretty lemon mousse with fresh berries, and a pecan pie with homemade vanilla bean ice cream and candied pecans…

Special Desserts at Old Edwards Inn and Spa

We should have spent some time in the Old Edwards Inn fitness center the next morning before we ordered a scrumptious breakfast. We had a Belgian Waffle (with delicious bourbon barrel maple syrup) and thick cut French toast, with crispy bacon. Every bite was delicious…
