Outstanding Dinner at Marco Trattoria, Brevard

Some friends told us they liked the Marco Trattoria restaurant in Brevard, so we planned a visit. We were glad we made a reservation because we didn’t realize it was the same night as the Christmas Parade and Twilight Tour

Brevard NC Christmas Parade and Twilight Tour

The Brevard Chamber of Commerce turned the quaint little town into a beautifully decorated scene straight from the movie, It’s a Wonderful Life, with carriage rides down luminaire-lit streets, singing, a Christmas tree lighting at the courthouse, pony and train rides, and lots of other activities.

From the moment we arrived at the Marco Trattoria restaurant, we had a great culinary experience. The dining area is casual and comfortable, with booths and tables…

The staff was exceptionally helpful and courteous. (I have no idea how they remember all the specials, let alone all the ingredients in them.) There were lots of choices, and they all sounded fantastic. We started with a basket of bread and Theros extra virgin olive oil with imported Parmesan cheese. It was addicting.

Then we had a fantastic “Marco Salad” which had Arugula, more Theros EVOO, red sea salt, grilled lemon and goat cheese crostini. It was amazing. And large. So we shared it…

Both of our entrées were phenomenal. One was the special Chicken Roulade, stuffed with spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, and goat cheese…

The other was tender and delicious Veal Marsala with potato au gratin and asparagus…

We asked for a bottle of the Marsala to take home, but I guess we’ll have to go back to enjoy it. We finished off our meal with dessert – Theros olive oil and Rosemary cake with roasted peaches and peach Gelato…

It sounded unusual, but it looked and tasted wonderful. Marco Trattoria restaurant is a gold mine, located just off the beaten path, at 204 West Main Street, Brevard, North Carolina 28712. Call 828.883.4841 for reservations.

Gem Mine is Great Kids Activity in Brevard, NC

Outside Crystal Mountain Gem Mine, Brevard, NC

We asked our son to skip work from his children’s stationery business and bring his family up to Brevard, NC, so our grand kids could strike it rich at the Crystal Mountain Gem Mine. We met his family before the doors were even open. They thought they were going to have to walk through a muddy mine, so they all wore old shoes, t-shirts and jeans, only to find out it’s super clean and tidy inside the Crystal Mountain Gem Mine…

Inside Crystal Mountain Gem Mine, Brevard, NC

While my teenage granddaughter shopped for precious stones, my two other grand kids  (along with mom, dad and Nana) sat at the 52-ft.-long flume and “worked” hard, sifting through large buckets full of sand and dirt…

Their “hard work” turned into joy and excitement with each gemstone they found…

Joy of Striking it Rich at Crystal Mountain Gem Mine

When they had emptied their buckets they collected their gems and presented them to Crystal Mountain Gem Mine owner Chris Cloer, who described each gemstone to our prospectors. To their surprise and excitement, they had found two rubies that could be worth over $1,000 when they’re cut, polished and mounted…

Gemstone Appraisal at Crystal Mountain Gem Mine

Special thanks to Chris and his crew at the Crystal Mountain Gem Mine for a terrific time with our grand kids. My grand kids agree that Crystal Mountain Gem Mine is one of the most fun children’s activities in Brevard, NC. It’s open seven days a week, and conveniently located at 31 S. Broad Street in Brevard. Everyday is Grandparents Day in Brevard, NC

Outside OP Taylor's Toy Store, Brevard, NC

After all the excitement at Crystal Mountain Gem Mine we headed across the street to the famous OP Taylor’s Toy Store. Although our grand kids were very familiar with “the coolest toy store on the planet” our poor, adult son had never seen it. I think he enjoyed himself at the racetrack with my grandson…

Afterward we headed down the block to Rocky’s Grill and Soda Shop for lunch…

Nana had a delicious salad and once again, grandpa set a good example of eating-healthy with two grilled Hebrew National kosher hot dogs. They truly are the best on the planet…

Image of the Week: “Handle” by Sue Hershey

Image of the Week: "Handle" by Professional Photographer Sue Hershey

The image of the week — “Handle” — is a sample of one of photographer Sue Hershey’s compelling abstract images. Sue is known here in Western North Carolina for using her camera to record many of the symbols of our region that are fast fading. Her barn and old truck series are examples…

“I define my work as abstract versions of the real things you see in the mountains.” Sue visited the mountains in 2004 and quickly made the area home.

Sue’s photographic career has spanned over three decades. She spent much of it in New York City where she learned her craft by studying at both New York City School of Visual Arts and New York University. The classes involved “texture and highly colored composition and this really rubbed off on me.” Sue says she takes “normal” photos as well, although she really enjoys the abstracts (as do the customers!). In 2006 Sue co-founded Bluewood Gallery as a place to highlight photography amidst so many other wonderful mediums here.

Sue also enjoys macro photography…

In 2013 Sue joined Number 7 Arts Gallery — a gallery in downtown Brevard, NC, that displays the work of over 25 artists in a variety of mediums. “This is a vibrant art hub. There are so many talented people who choose to do their art here.” She recently collaborated with internationally known artist Ann DerGara and created a piece telling of their individual journey to the mountains. “No matter what part of the country one lives in there is something unique about it. I try to capture the flavor of the region…the things that identify the lives of the people in it. I’m delighted to be among those practicing art in this part of the country.”
