Lime Leaf My Thai Restaurant, Hendersonville

My sweetheart was feeling adventurous recently so she ordered Volcano Beef at Lime Leaf My Thai restaurant in Hendersonville, NC. They obviously know how to light her fire…

We always enjoy ourselves when we visit Lime Leaf. The atmosphere is casual and romantic, not too loud or busy, and the service is great. Here’s the dining room on the main floor (they also have a nice balcony area upstairs with cozy booths)…

Best of all, the food and prices are excellent. As usual, we started with spring rolls, which are always prepared perfectly…

I had crispy duck with a stir-fry sauce, green peas, bamboo shoots, bell peppers, and garnished with crispy basil leaves. It was terrific…

If you like Thai food, you’ll definitely enjoy Lime Leaf. (The original Lime Leaf was voted best restaurant in Spartanburg, SC.) The newer location is at 342 N. Main Street in Hendersonville. Call ahead for reservations, especially on weekends: 828-692-3300. For a Google map to the restaurant click here.

Huntin’ Camp BBQ & Grill in Travelers Rest, SC

I’m not sure how many times I’ve driven by Huntin’ Camp BBQ restaurant in Travelers Rest, SC, on my way to Greenville, where our grandkids live, but this week I finally had a chance to stop when I met my son for lunch. It’s a fun place…

Although it looks a little rustic, the dining room is super clean. The bear just inside the front door and the trophies on the walls make it interesting. Here’s the dining room…

And here’s another wall with a few more trophies…

But what really makes the place popular is the grub. Their barbecue is Carolina style, which means it’s vinegar and mustard based. (It was perfect.) But if you like it sweet, they have some very tasty ketchup-based sauce that you can add to it. I had the pulled pork sandwich and my son had the brisket of beef. Like our friends hangin’ on the walls, we were stuffed, and we still had a lot left on our plates.

As you can tell from the photos above, I didn’t take any good ones, and the close up shots of our sandwiches were really bad. Sorry. (And they tasted so good that I didn’t go back to the car and get my other camera.)

Our New Dining Guide Is Causing Quite a Stir…

…in our stomachs. The photos and descriptions we’ve been getting from restaurant owners for our new Blue Ridge Travel Guide book are really stirring up our appetites…

Here’s how Adam Wilson, the owner and chef at Square Root restaurant, described his creation: The 12 oz. Grilled Pork Chop arrives to the table like a Christmas package begging to be opened. The perfectly cooked, juicy Chop glistens under slowly melting Vanilla Maple Bacon Butter. Served with an addictively delicious Sweet Potato Hash, the flavors dance with one another to compose a truly excellent meal.

Chef Adam sent another photo. This was his special scallops creation…

See what I mean? Who could look at these incredible meals without getting hungry? Here’s Chef Adam’s description of his awesome entree above: Succulent and perfectly sweet pan-seared sea scallops sit royally atop a savory tomato leek risotto crowned with a vibrant cucumber-mint salsa.

Just looking at these restaurant photos and web sites while working on our dining guide has increased my waist line by a couple of inches.

I haven’t uploaded photos to our online dining sections, but I added text and links over the weekend. Click on each of these towns to see our dining guides for each of these areas: Asheville, Black Mountain, Brevard, Hendersonville-Flat Rock, Lake Lure-Chimney Rock, Maggie Valley, and Waynesville. Then visit a few of their web sites. You’ll see what I mean…

STP Sandwich at Groucho’s Deli in Greenville

We met two of our sons yesterday for a quick lunch at Groucho’s Deli in downtown Greenville, South Carolina. Both of our boys insisted we get the STP Dipper. It was huge…

…and they were right. The STP Dipper was delicious. Packed with roast beef, turkey, and bacon bits, and covered with melted swiss cheese. But the tastiest part was the Formula 45 sauce. It was amazing. (I’d tell you what’s in it, but then I’d have to…)

Ok, seriously, it was fantastic. And the service was great — and fast!

There was one small thing that seemed a bit odd, and it left a bad taste in our mouths. We each had a 25-cent charge on our tickets for a cup of water. (We also bought coffee.) The last time I was charged for water was about 30 years ago at a restaurant in California during a three-year drought. (I haven’t heard about a water shortage in Greenville, SC, have you?)

Take a look at the Groucho’s Deli menu by clicking here. The address is 20 East Coffee Street in Greenville, SC. For an interactive Google map click here. It’s worth finding. (Just don’t drink the water.)

Awesome Dinner at Square Root in Brevard, NC

We took a little ride last night over to Brevard for dinner at the Square Root restaurant. We started our meal with fried calamari that had been marinated in buttermilk. Our waitress suggested we get it half and half, with both Asian sauce and spicy Fra Diavolo…

She was right. That’s the best way to get it. Delicious. Then we had a fresh salad, followed by a special entrée. Chef Adam Wilson told me he had “flown in some fish” from Hawaii. It sounded interesting, but I had no idea what was coming…

It was a perfectly grilled, short billed marlin with califlower mash, topped with pineapple chutney and a coconut beurre blanc sauce. The picture doesn’t do it justice, and I simply cannot describe it. The meal was off the charts. Fantastic.

Afterward, Chef Adam prepared a nice lemon sorbet to cleanse our palate, and then we had our favorite. I don’t think it’s on the menu, but I believe the three layers include a raspberry mousse on top, a light lemon cake in the middle and a delicious cheesecake on the bottom…

Special thanks to Chef Adam and Manager Rick… and their staff… for making our date night so amazing. We’ll be back again soon.

For a wonderful meal with great service, visit Square Root in Brevard, NC. Our special entrée, flown all the way from Hawaii, was only $20. For an interactive Google map to Square Root click here. To look over the Square Root menus and web site click here.

Pop’s Diner Now Open for Dinner On Weekends

When we drove by Pop’s Diner after dinner this evening we realized they were open so we stopped in for dessert. Before the re-opening and renovation the diner closed daily after lunch. Their new schedule is obviously a huge success. They were sold out of all their pies and desserts, so we had a root beer float with vanilla ice cream. It was delicious. We sat at the opposite end of the counter from the pink pay phone…
