Visited the Grove Arcade in Asheville, NC

We paid another visit to the Grove Arcade in Asheville, NC, yesterday. It’s a fun place to visit. Some of us like the shopping…

There are lots of options, from furniture to jewelry, cosmetics, clothing, fine art, and more…

Some of us enjoy the Grove Arcade because we find the architecture fascinating…

We also stopped for lunch at Carmel’s. It’s a good place to eat, indoors and out…

My hamburger was delicious, and my sweetheart’s pizza was off the charts. We didn’t get pictures of our food, so take a look at Carmel’s menu and their photo gallery. For dessert and coffee we stopped at True Confections. Check them out online here. They have great pies, pastries, cakes and cookies… and the best coffee…

There’s even shopping outside the Grove Arcade, with street vendors offering their wares…

Next time I go downtown I’m going to stop by the hotdog stand and have a Brat. They looked really good. I especially like this vendor’s sense of humor…

The Grove Arcade has an interesting history you can read about here. For a directory with descriptions of all the shops, galleries and restaurants at the Grove Arcade click here.

And finally, a special thanks to the parking meter attendant who gave me a warning ticket for going over my time limit. That’s the first time I’ve ever received a warning instead of a fine for a parking violation, and I really appreciate it. You made a perfect ending to our day!

Nanci Griffith at the Porter Center, Brevard, NC

Last night we went to the Porter Center for Performing Arts on the campus of Brevard College. It’s a beautiful facility. Here’s a picture of the entrance outside…

And here’s a photo of the stage inside (I apologize for the poor quality)…

I purchased tickets last month to see Nanci Griffith in person. (We watched her on PBS 20 years ago and bought two of her CD’s, which we still enjoy on an occasional Fair Summer Evening.) The performance started out good. First we heard The Kennedys. They’re great entertainers. Maura’s voice is a lot like Griffith’s, and Pete can really play the guitar…

Then Griffith came on stage with her percussionist. The combination was awesome…

However, about halfway through their set Griffith gave the audience a brief lecture on gay-marriage, and at that point a few people got up and left. On their way out one person yelled something about coming to hear a concert, not a political speech.

Of course Griffith had the mic and quickly won the debate to the resounding applause of about half the audience who had jumped to their feet. The other half sat and looked around as if they weren’t sure what had happened… their fun time had quickly turned into an uncomfortable, divided political forum.

On the bright side I learned a valuable lesson. After we got home my wife suggested that in the future I check the web sites of entertainers before buying $60 tickets. With the wide spectrum of strong political opinions in Western North Carolina that’s a good idea. If I had looked at Griffith’s web site I would have realized that she has a tendency to get political on stage and I would have saved some time and money. Here’s a headline from Griffith’s home page: “In Today’s New York Times – ‘Politics Sung With a Texas Kick’.” Oh well… lesson learned.

Carolina Diner Reopened Today As Pop’s Diner

I read that the old Carolina Diner in Hendersonville, North Carolina, was renovated and is re-opening today as Pop’s Diner. It sounded like a pretty cool place, so I got up before the sun to see for myself…

It hadn’t opened yet, and staff members were still busy preparing for the 6:30 a.m. opening, but they let me in anyway so I could take some pictures. Leigh Kelley, a writer for the local Times-News, did an excellent job of describing it in her article over the weekend. Here are a couple of pictures inside the “new” 1950s-style Pop’s Diner…

There’s even a gas pump at one end of the dining area. I wondered if it wasn’t put there to inspire crusin’ again on Main Street. By the time the weather warms up I’ll bet the parking lot will be full of 1950s and 60s street rods and muscle cars…

Pop’s Diner used to be called the Carolina Diner. It’s  located at 5 Points in Hendersonville, across from Hendersonville High School and Boyd Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick. The address is 860 North Main Street. For an interactive Google map to Pop’s Diner click here.

Ed Gerhard, Bill Mize Guitar Christmas Concert

We watched and listened to a delightful performance this past Friday night by fingerstyle guitarists Ed Gerhard and Bill Mize: the 18th annual ”Guitar Christmas Concert” at Jubilee! Community in Asheville, NC…

Asheville at Christmas time is very special, but Ed Gerhard and Bill Mize playing Christmas Carols together put it way over the top… It just doesn’t get any better.

Gerhard is a GRAMMY Award winner who has performed across the U.S. and overseas, and Mize is a Winfield National Fingerstyle Guitar Champion who recently released a CD entitled The Angel’s Share.

Gerhard has two Christmas CDs. One is entitled Christmas and the other is On A Cold Winter’s Night. (I bought one of each. They’re worth every penny — we now have two new favorites!)

If you like soft guitar music, you’ll love these albums. You can listen to clips from Christmas free at CDUniverse here. When I checked, Amazon.com didn’t have free clips, and their prices were higher than CDUniverse. If you buy one of these CDs for someone you like, they’ll be very grateful. And if you buy one for yourself, you’ll be glad you did. (And if you don’t get one for yourself, you’ll wish you did when you hear it!)

Special thanks to my son, Dave Wike, who gave his mom a free ticket for her birthday to attend this event (and for letting me tag along). What a sweet time.

Merry Christmas!
