Nanci Griffith at the Porter Center, Brevard, NC

Last night we went to the Porter Center for Performing Arts on the campus of Brevard College. It’s a beautiful facility. Here’s a picture of the entrance outside…

And here’s a photo of the stage inside (I apologize for the poor quality)…

I purchased tickets last month to see Nanci Griffith in person. (We watched her on PBS 20 years ago and bought two of her CD’s, which we still enjoy on an occasional Fair Summer Evening.) The performance started out good. First we heard The Kennedys. They’re great entertainers. Maura’s voice is a lot like Griffith’s, and Pete can really play the guitar…

Then Griffith came on stage with her percussionist. The combination was awesome…

However, about halfway through their set Griffith gave the audience a brief lecture on gay-marriage, and at that point a few people got up and left. On their way out one person yelled something about coming to hear a concert, not a political speech.

Of course Griffith had the mic and quickly won the debate to the resounding applause of about half the audience who had jumped to their feet. The other half sat and looked around as if they weren’t sure what had happened… their fun time had quickly turned into an uncomfortable, divided political forum.

On the bright side I learned a valuable lesson. After we got home my wife suggested that in the future I check the web sites of entertainers before buying $60 tickets. With the wide spectrum of strong political opinions in Western North Carolina that’s a good idea. If I had looked at Griffith’s web site I would have realized that she has a tendency to get political on stage and I would have saved some time and money. Here’s a headline from Griffith’s home page: “In Today’s New York Times – ‘Politics Sung With a Texas Kick’.” Oh well… lesson learned.

Lime Leaf My Thai Restaurant, Hendersonville

My sweetheart was feeling adventurous recently so she ordered Volcano Beef at Lime Leaf My Thai restaurant in Hendersonville, NC. They obviously know how to light her fire…

We always enjoy ourselves when we visit Lime Leaf. The atmosphere is casual and romantic, not too loud or busy, and the service is great. Here’s the dining room on the main floor (they also have a nice balcony area upstairs with cozy booths)…

Best of all, the food and prices are excellent. As usual, we started with spring rolls, which are always prepared perfectly…

I had crispy duck with a stir-fry sauce, green peas, bamboo shoots, bell peppers, and garnished with crispy basil leaves. It was terrific…

If you like Thai food, you’ll definitely enjoy Lime Leaf. (The original Lime Leaf was voted best restaurant in Spartanburg, SC.) The newer location is at 342 N. Main Street in Hendersonville. Call ahead for reservations, especially on weekends: 828-692-3300. For a Google map to the restaurant click here.

In addition, the new book will be in over 1,000 professional offices, salons, spas, coffee shops and other public places in and around Asheville, from Black Mountain to Maggie Valley, and from Brevard to Weaverville.

Now it’s time to get back to exploring, taking pictures and writing reviews… the fun part!

Wickwire Fine Art & Folk Art in Hendersonville

It seems like we’ve been working all winter on our new Blue Ridge Travel Guide book, so we decided to take a break and go out and enjoy the beautiful Spring weather. We strolled down Main Street in Hendersonville, NC, and stopped in Wickwire Fine Art & Folk Art Gallery…

Wickwire has a beautiful display of high quality, original new works of traditional/transitional art and contemporary folk art in paintings, American handmade craft, photography, handcrafted furniture and more — at very reasonable prices…

In addition to the art, we heard some wonderful music by Beegie Adair. It’s almost entirely instrumental and very relaxing and romantic. We couldn’t resist and eventually purchased two CDs — a terrific find, and worth every penny.

The Wickwire Fine Art & Folk Art gallery is located at 330 North Main Street, Hendersonville, NC 28792. For an interactive Google map click here, or to visit the Wickwire web site click here.
